A neurologist is a doctor who specializes in treating and managing disorders of the brain and nervous system. His background and medical training include an undergraduate degree, completion of a medical school, at least a one-year internship, and three years of special training.

During the exam, the neurologist reviews the patient’s health history while paying special attention to his or her current condition.

On average, the exam will test the vision, coordination, reflexes, and sensation of the patient. This information helps determine if the problem exists in the nervous system. But further tests may be needed to confirm a diagnosis.
